What is Mesothelioma? – Mesothelioma Information

Malignant mesothelioma is a very rare, incurable, asbestos-related cancer that usually affects the lining of the lungs. This cancer is known as pleural mesothelioma. But mesothelioma tumours can also form on the linings of the abdomen, heart and testes.

Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of mesothelioma. People exposed to asbestos at home, work or in the military have a higher risk of developing the cancerous disease.

Malignant mesothelioma is a type of cancer that occurs in the thin layer of tissue that covers the majority of your internal organs (mesothelium).

Mesothelioma is an aggressive and deadly form of cancer. Mesothelioma treatments are available, but for many people with mesothelioma, a cure isn’t possible.

Doctors divide mesothelioma into different types based on what part of the mesothelium is affected. Mesothelioma most often affects the tissue that surrounds the lungs (pleura). This type is called pleural mesothelioma. Other, rarer types of mesothelioma affect tissue in the abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma), around the heart and around the testicles.

More than 3,000 cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed yearly in the United States. Pleural mesothelioma accounts for 75% of cases. The average age of a mesothelioma patient is 69. Men represent the majority of mesothelioma diagnoses.

Mesothelioma Symptoms

Symptoms of mesothelioma appear when tumors spread, grow and press against the chest wall and the abdominal cavity. Chest pain and shortness of breath are the most common symptoms.

  • Dry coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Respiratory complications
  • Pain in the chest or abdomen
  • Fever or night sweats
  • Pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs)
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness in the muscles

Signs and symptoms of other types of mesothelioma are unclear, since these forms of the disease are very rare.

Pericardial mesothelioma, which affects tissue that surrounds the heart, can cause signs and symptoms such as breathing difficulty and chest pains.

Mesothelioma of tunica vaginalis, which affects tissue surrounding the testicles, may be first detected as swelling or a mass on a testicle.

Mesothelioma Diagnosis

A biopsy is the only mesothelioma test that confirms a diagnosis. Doctors may use additional diagnostic procedures. An early mesothelioma diagnosis may increase a patient’s eligibility for all treatment options.

Most people initially undergo a basic chest X-ray to check for any abnormalities. If an abnormal growth or fluid around the lung is detected, doctors will recommend a more detailed imaging scan such as a PET scan, CT scan or MRI.

If cancer is suspected, doctors will recommend taking a sample of tissue, also knowns as a biopsy. Doctors use this tissue sample to definitively confirm the presence of malignant mesothelioma cells.

Blood tests may be used but do not confirm the presence of mesothelioma. Researchers are evaluating if blood tests can aid in the early diagnosis of at-risk former asbestos workers.

Doctors use at least five staging systems to stage pleural mesothelioma. The IMIG staging system is preferred. No universal staging system exists for the other mesothelioma types.

Mesothelioma Causes

Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of mesothelioma. People exposed to asbestos at home, work or in the military have a higher risk of developing cancerous disease.

A person inhales or swallows microscopic airborne asbestos fibres. The asbestos fibres become lodged in the lining of the lungs, abdomen or heart. Embedded fibres damage mesothelial cells and cause inflammation. Over time, tumours form on the damaged mesothelium, leading to mesothelioma.

In general, cancer begins when a series of changes (mutations) happens in a cell’s DNA. The DNA contains the instructions that tell a cell what to do. The mutations tell the cell to grow and multiply out of control. The abnormal cells accumulate and form a tumour.

It isn’t clear what causes the initial genetic mutations that lead to mesothelioma, though researchers have identified factors that may increase the risk. It’s likely that cancers form because of an interaction between many factors, such as inherited conditions, your environment, your health conditions and your lifestyle choices.

Mesothelioma Treatments

Most doctors have never encountered mesothelioma because it is rare cancer. Doctors who focus on mesothelioma at speciality treatment centres provide patients with the best chances of extending life and improving prognosis.

In fact, a 2009 Journal of General Internal Medicine study showed cancer care requires “skills of speciality physicians such as medical oncologists, surgeons and radiation oncologists.”

Mesothelioma is generally resistant to radiation and chemotherapy treatment. Long-term survival and cures are exceedingly rare. Treatment of malignant mesothelioma at earlier stages has a better prognosis. Clinical behavior of the malignancy is affected by several factors including the continuous mesothelial surface of the pleural cavity which favors local metastasis via exfoliated cells, invasion to underlying tissue and other organs within the pleural cavity, and the extremely long latency period between asbestos exposure and development of the disease. The histological subtype and the patient’s age and health status also help predict prognosis. The epithelioid histology responds better to treatment and has a survival advantage over sarcomatoid histology.

The effectiveness of radiotherapy compared to chemotherapy or surgery for malignant pleural mesothelioma is not known.

Mesothelioma class action lawsuit

The two types of mesothelioma lawsuits are personal injury and wrongful death claims. A mesothelioma personal injury lawsuit allows the cancer patient to seek compensation from the company or companies that exposed them to asbestos. The average compensation from a mesothelioma lawsuit trial is $2.4 million.

If your family is bearing the burden of mesothelioma, an asbestos exposure lawsuit may be right for you and your loved ones. The steps for filing a mesothelioma lawsuit vary depending on the type of claim filed.

The two types of legal claims your family may be able to file through asbestos litigation include:

  • Personal Injury Claims: A person diagnosed with mesothelioma is eligible to file a personal injury lawsuit against the companies responsible for exposing them to asbestos. Asbestos liability is usually based on companies’ failure to warn employees and consumers about the dangers linked to inhaling the toxic mineral.
  • Wrongful Death Claims: The estate of a deceased mesothelioma patient is eligible to file a wrongful death claim, seeking compensation to cover medical bills, funeral expenses and lost income. Similarly, if a mesothelioma patient files a personal injury lawsuit but passes away before it is resolved, the estate may continue the claim. When compensation is awarded in wrongful death lawsuits, the estate is the recipient.

Mesothelioma Specialist

Mesothelioma specialists are surgeons or oncologists who have significant experience diagnosing or treating mesothelioma. They are highly qualified individuals with years of formal education and hands-on experience with mesothelioma.

Seeing a mesothelioma specialist who is right for your diagnosis is crucial. Mesothelioma specialists have the precise expertise needed to diagnose and treat mesothelioma. This specialization gives patients a much better chance of survival. It also helps patients better understand their disease and feel more confident in their health care team.

Understanding the difference between a mesothelioma specialist and a general oncologist is important. Though both are experts in cancer, only a mesothelioma specialist has the expertise needed to properly diagnose and treat mesothelioma patients.

Mesothelioma is a rare disease with only 3,000 diagnoses each year. On the other hand, common cancers like lung cancer have over 200,000 diagnoses each year. Oncologists deal with many types of cancer, but mesothelioma is not usually one of them.

General oncologists work at hospitals that are not updated with the latest treatment practices, diagnostic tools and mesothelioma research. Mesothelioma specialists work in mesothelioma cancer centres specifically dedicated to treating and researching mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma specialists have done residencies in cardiothoracic and/or gastrointestinal surgeries. Many of them sit on the boards of major mesothelioma research foundations. Some have even founded treatment and research programs themselves.
